After an item has been successfully donated, you may request a letter of receipt from the nonprofit organization. Some organizations may not be approved by the IRS for deductibility, so it's a good idea to ask before you donate.

You can deduct your contributions only if you make them to a qualified organization. IRS Publication 526
Volunteers can only claim certain out-of-pocket expenses. IRS Publication 526
Deductions for property or goods would be the fair market value of the property at the time it is donated. IRS Publication 561
