| Last updated on June 17, 2010 |
Volunteers enjoy the beautiful outdoor environment of Hawaii State Hospital's Lo'i Kalo and Aloha Garden. Volunteers work as a team with clinicians to promote community reintegration for mental health clients. Projects involve growing exotic fruits, vermicast (compost from worms), tropical flowers, Native Hawaiian plants, and kalo, as well as cultivating and utilizing produce for crafts such as lei-making, ikebana, cooking and other activities . Volunteers assist with these culturally-grounded activities for psychiatric patients. The Hospital's Aloha Garden director, a clinical psychologist, says “Everything that goes on in the garden is for the therapeutic benefit of our clients.” Volunteers support the mission of the Hospital to provide safe psychiatric treatment and rehabilitation to individuals suffering from mental illness. Interested adults (18 years and older) apply to serve as hospital volunteers. Application screening includes TB test, court records check, and references. Volunteers accepted into the program complete a Hospital orientation class. On-site parking is free. This opportunity is sponsored by: Hawaii State Hospital
