Pouhala Marsh Wetland Restoration

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on May 25, 2010

Hawai`i Nature Center is a private, non-profit organization. Our primary mission is to provide hands-on environmental education programs to families and children. Pouhala Marsh is located across the street from the Transfer Station on Waipahu Depot Road. It is comprised of a remnant fishpond and coastal marsh in the western loch of Pearl Harbor and is considered part of the Waikele watershed. Pouhala is owned by the City and County of Honolulu and the State of Hawai`i. A land-lease agreement with the City will allow the State to manage the entire area as a wildlife sanctuary.

At 70 acres, Pouhala is the largest of the remaining wetland habitats in Pearl Harbor. Pouhala Marsh is of vital importance for the endangered Hawaiian stilt. During non-breeding season, Hawaiian stilt numbers on the marsh can exceed 150 birds (10% of the remaining world population). The Hawai`i Nature Center is involved with this project because we utilize Pouhala as an teaching site for educational programs.

The service project work may involve wet and muddy work. The work may include invasive plant removal and native outplanting. Please note the following:
•Bring work gloves and water. HNC will provide snacks and juice.
•Wear a hat, use sunscreen, and dress to get dirty and muddy. It can get very HOT in Waipahu! Footwear (covered shoes or rubber boots) is required.
•The work may involve going into the water and mud (at least up to your knees) to remove the pickleweed and mangrove seedlings. We highly recommend bringing a change of clothes, towel, rubber slippers and plastic bag to put your dirty clothes in.
•There are no bathroom facilities and no running water at the Marsh. However, we will have jugs of water and soap for washing hands and feet after the service project.
