Nearly 8,000 people a year suffer a traumatic brain injury in Hawaii. Do you know someone with a traumatic brain injury? Traumatic brain injury can be caused by a fall, car crash or blow to the head. Effects can include memory loss, confusion and difficulty communicating. The Hooikaika Peer Mentoring project can help adults with traumatic brain injury by matching them with mentors. Peers must be adults who have experienced a traumatic brain injury. Peers cannot have a history of violent crime. Mentors must be adults who have recovered from a traumatic brain injury. Mentors cannot have a history of violent crime. All volunteers are fingerprinted for a criminal history check.
