Assist low-income, middle-income, and elderly taxpayers in preparing federal and state income tax returns. Most returns are prepared using electronic filing software provided by the IRS. Prior tax preparation experience (including preparing your own returns) is desirable, but not required. Training is provided annually in January (approximately 40 hours for new volunteers, 15 hours for experienced volunteers) covering tax law and software. We also need volunteers as greeters and site and district coordinators which do not require tax training.

Tax preparation and training materials are supplied. Program-related travel may be reimbursed at a rate of 50 cents per mile (as of Jan 1, 2010) if requested by the volunteer.

Volunteers are asked to serve at least 40 hours total during the tax season (Feb 1 to Apr 15), or approximately 4 hours per week to qualify for reimbursement. All volunteer tax preparers must attend training and pass the IRS qualification test annually.
