Agency: USO Hawaii
Donation name: USO HAWAII EXTENDS HOLIDAY GIVING TO WOUNDED WARRIORS
Description: This December, USO Hawaii will focus their holiday efforts at helping Wounded Warriors celebrate this time of the year with some 500 holiday packages. Wounded Warriors (Wounded Warrior Transition Unit-Schofield Barracks, Tripler Army Medical Center, Warrior Transition Unit-Marine Corps Base, Fisher House, Malama Na Koa, Warrior Transition Wellness Program) will benefit from this holiday appeal that USO Hawaii is organizing through its community partners and individual donors in our island community.

In-kind donations of non-perishable goods may be dropped off at the Navy Exchange Aloha reception Desk, NEX, ground floor. USO volunteers will conduct an all-day appeal for in-kind donations by the tented areas at the Pearl Harbor NEX on Tuesday, December 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Gift certificates of $25 and $50 from the NEX, MCX, Mal-Mart, and Target may also be mailed to USO Hawaii at 300 Rodgers Blvd., # 48, Honolulu, HI 96819. Check donations may be made out to USO Hawaii and mailed to the same address. These donations are tax deductible and may be applied to the 2009 tax reporting. For additional information as to how you can help, please contact 808 836-3351 808 836-3351 , elsmith@uso.org.

Early response from businesses and our community consists of Gift Certificates from Outback, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, dessert vouchers from Romano’s Macaroni Grill, and DECA.

Despite the economic downturn, Hawaii residents maintain their aloha spirit of giving. Ninety-two percent of the islands’ total charitable giving went to nonprofit organizations, although the amount of giving has remained flat compared to 2001. Many are donating goods rather than cash, according to a survey compiled for the Hawai’i Community Foundation. (Honolulu Advertiser, 92% in Hawaii give to charity even in toughest of times, Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.)

A list of Recipient Wounded Warriors will be compiled through various military commands, hospitals and chaplains.

Final distribution of 500 packages is scheduled at the Oahu Veterans Center (1298 Kukila St., Honolulu, HI 96818 by Radford High School) on Sunday, Dec.20 from 1:30 to 3:00. Wounded Warriors or family members need to present their military ID to collect their allocated holiday package.
