Our mission is to provide safe, integrated, evidence-based psychiatric treatment and rehabilitation to individuals suffering from mental illness and co-occurring disorders. Self directed recovery and community reintegration are the primary goals.

Description:
Situated aside the beautiful Ko'olau foothills with a view of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii State Hospital is the only hospital in Hawaii dedicated to serving adults with serious mental illnesses. The Hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission, and serves as an integral part of the continuum of mental health care statewide.

Volunteers are an important part of the Hospital's treatment milieu. Volunteers assist the Hospital's professional and support staff in a variety of valued ways. These include office or support roles, visiting patients, or assisting clinical staff in patient care. All staff - volunteers and professional alike - work cooperatively to help patients' achieve successful reintegration with the community.

Volunteers, like all other staff, receive training in their specific assignments. Many volunteers find their experience a great opportunity to dispel myths and develop greater compassion and appreciation for individuals with mental illness. Volunteers help the Hospital promote better community understanding of mental illness and its treatment.

Essential patient care services and programs of the Hospital include Psychiatry, Psychology, Neuropsychology, Social Services, Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR), Recreation Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Forensic Psychology, Dual-diagnosis care, Spiritual Care/Chaplain Services, and more.

History:
In 2003, the Hospital instituted a treatment mall, emphasizing psycho-social rehabilitation, with therapy and various life skills classes provided for patients on the Hospital campus.
