Kokua 'Ohana is a foster care program under the Partners in Development Foundation; a non-profit organization working on building communities for success using Native Hawaiian tradition and values. Our mission is, "Striving for cultural harmony within Hawaii's child welfare system by uniting churches, community organizations, and families to care for and nurture Hawaii's foster keiki."
Description:
Kokua 'Ohana is focused on the healthy recruitment and support for foster families in the state of Hawaii. This is a direct response to the reality that 52% of all children in foster care are Hawaiian; an average of 1400 keiki. Only half of those keiki are placed in homes that share their cultural background and heritage. Kokua 'Ohana works with community and faith based organizations, along with people involved in the foster community. This includes foster families and children, as well as birth families. Our purpose is to recruit more foster homes from Native Hawaiian communities and we are committed to building foster family networks or "hui" that will support and serve the foster families in your church, your club, your school, your homestead, your community.
History:
Kokua 'Ohana began in 2005, funded by a grant from the Administration of Native Americans and the Department of Human Services. We have recruited over 40 new Hawaiian foster families and have built at least 5 new hui in the Leeward and Windward area of the island of O'ahu.
