Waikiki Aquarium

The Waikiki Aquarium's dedicated volunteers, diverse in age, background and experience, help fulfill the mission "to inspire and promote understanding, appreciation and conservation of Pacific marine life." They out number employees 5 to 1 and assist in accomplishing the mission by learning more about Hawaii's marine environment and by sharing how others can help to preserve and protect it. We have many volunteer opportunities to match your interest and skills.

Description:
The Waikiki Aquarium is a leader in bringing to view the great diversity of aquatic life found in Hawaii and tropical Pacific waters. The Aquarium achieves this mission through educational programs, exhibits, special events and research. Thousands of visiting school children, residents, and visitors to Hawaii consistently keep the Aquarium in the top ten visitor attractions in the state.

History:
The Waikiki Aquarium opened in 1904. It is the third aquarium ever built in the United States, the second oldest accredited aquarium, as well as the oldest one west of the Mississippi. In 1919 the University of Hawaii assumed administration of the Aquarium. Till today, the Waikiki Aquarium continues to be recognized for it's cutting edge research in the husbandry of rare marine animals and habitat.
