Agency Details:
Aloha United Way
The purpose of Aloha United Way is to provide leadership to bring people together to create a healthier, more compassionate community.
Description:
Aloha United Way brings individuals and organizations together to improve health and human services on Oahu. We are able to accomplish our work because of the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. AUW is committed to maintaining and strengthening our community's safety net and ensuring services are available for people who need them.
History:
Aloha United Way has been serving Hawaii's people since 1919. That's when Frank C. Atherton, then vice president of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce, established the United Welfare Fund under the jurisdiction of the Chamber. In 1938, it became a separate legal entity and was renamed the Honolulu Community Chest. In 1966, a citizens' committee dissolved the Honolulu Community Chest and created the Aloha United Fund. The Aloha United Fund officially changed its name to Aloha United Way in 1974. Aloha United Way has evolved along with the community it serves. Over its long history of caring for people on Oahu, it has raised millions of dollars for health and human services, brought together the efforts of thousands of volunteers and has helped build a stronger, healthier community.
