History:
The Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations traces its history back to 1901 and the Shippers' Wharf Committee, which collected a tax to eradicate rats carrying bubonic plague. Under several names since then, it has evolved, bridging the interests of all community sectors. In recent decades, as HCSC, it ran Help for Nonprofits, the Weinberg Fellows and Castle Colleagues programs. Today, HANO has translated that experience into management and consulting services serving the nonprofit and public sectors and community groups. Past planning efforts by the organization led to such initiatives as creating The Family Centers, the Hawaii Foodbank, the ASK-2000 information and referral service (now the Aloha United Way's 211 service), the Ke Ala Hoku community vision program and the outcomes-based allocation process used by AUW and other funders.
