We serve the Islands LGBTQIA (Queer) Community by providing support, resource, education ,and networking.. Our mission is to be a statewide organization providing inter-island coordination, variety of programs and which advocates full equality for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Questioning Communities of Hawaii.
Description:
Our vision is to be a statewide organization centrally located, which coordinates, facilitates and develops Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Questioning organizations or groups and creates bridges to the community at large. The Center's basic belief is in the intrinsic human value of our community by extending to all open and honest communication, respect and commitment for our diverse community.
History:
Originally called "Love and Peace Together (LPT)", The Center was founded in 1973 as a non-profit, tax-exempt community service organization to deal with human sexuality issues and problems. For the first six months, the organization met at members' homes until it was organized enough to begin meeting in public libraries. In November of 1973, LPT established the first supportive facility in Hawai'i. It was called the Sexual Identity Center. At that time the use of the word Gay in print or advertising was considered dangerous. In June 1987, the organization's name changed to the Gay Community Center (GCC), and then again changed its name to the Gay and Lesbian Community Center, in 1990, to reflect a new and completely inclusive philosophy of the organization. From it's founding date and through the 1990's, the Gay & Lesbian Community Center led the battle for gay, lesbian, transgender, and bisexual rights and education in the islands. In June of 1996, the GLCC settled into an office at the YWCA's Fernhurst facility at Punahou and Wilder Avenues. August of 1999 a shared vision enable us to open Hawai'i largest out Center. We have just celebrated our third year anniversary at our present site. We are quickly reaching our limits at our new Out Center and are presently looking for newer and larger sites for our future. Our Center has over 12 volunteers staffing and helping to keep our Center open.
