Breakthroughs for Youth
Our mission is to positively alter the beliefs, attitudes and behavior of youth in order for them to develop healthier, more productive relationships with themselves, their families, and the community.
Description:
Breakthroughs offers 4 types of youth development and mentoring programs: 1)for 5th and 6th graders in elementary school; 2)for middle school youth; 3)for high school students, and 4A)a prevention program for any and all students, and 4B)an intervention program for at risk students to improve their performance and change their lives. The prevention programs are for vulnerable young people from ages of 10 to 14 years old. The developmental programs are for youth who want to fully develop their potential and realize their dreams. The intervention programs are for at risk youth who are headed down the wrong road and need to turn it around. Our programs are comprehensive, and include parent workshops, professional staff workshops, mentor training, and a 9 month to one year aftercare component with adult mentoring.
Youth create dreams and goals, develop internal motivation, develop self awareness, learn communication skills, develop problem solving capability, improve social interaction skills, learn self expression, develop assertiveness, learn self care, learn team work, develop conflict resolution skills, and develop presentation skills.
Breakthroughs offers professionals and adult volunteers the opportunity to develop more skills to work with today's young people.
We offer caring adults from the community the opportunity to learn who young people are, and to contribute to the young people.
We will train adults 1) as coaches who coach the young people in successfully completing the developmental intensive course, 2) as mentors who then support the young people in implementing what they learned into their daily lives, or 3) in a variety of production positions, from logistics, to transportation of the young people to and from events, to food service.
We also offer practicums or internships, and service learning for college students.
We train high school students to mentor middle or elementary school students, to support younger students in achieving success in education and in life.
