The mission of the Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund is to address the ongoing needs of the Museum and Visitor Center of the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Chief among these is the urgent need to raise the funds necessary to replace and expand the existing facility.
Description:
The Arizona Memorial Museum Association (AMMA) has established the Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund (PHMF) to raise over $50 million in capital improvement funds from public and private sources over the next three years. The funds will construct a new facility that replaces the USS Arizona Memorials' current deteriorating and inadequate Museum and Visitor Center at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The building has an estimated life of 3 to 5 years. This new facility, to be known as the Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum and Visitor Center, will house an expanded state-of-the-art museum, a new research and educational center with a library and teleconferencing facility, an outdoor amphitheater, movie theaters for education and visitor orientation, an expanded book shop, and improved visitor space and facilities. The new facility will nearly double the size of the existing museum and reconstruct the visitor center. The museum is designed to be the primary repository of artifacts and information related to the Attack on Pearl Harbor and the War in the Pacific. This project is a joint venture of AMMA, the National Park Service (NPS), and the United States Navy (USN) and has strong local, national and international support. The PHMF Campaign is a multi-faceted campaign directed by the AMMA Board of Directors, the PHMF Board of Directors, and a team of development professionals and consultants.
History:
Since its dedication in 1980 as the shore-side support facility to the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Arizona Memorial Museum and Visitor Center has experienced tremendous usage and high demand. Larger than expected visitation, structural deterioration due to water intrusion, inadequate climatic controls for museum artifacts, and insufficient educational and curatorial space all contribute to the need to replace and expand the current museum and visitor center. The project began in 2000 as the Arizona Memorial Fund. When the project expanded from an $8 million renovation to a $27 million construction program (plus $3 million or more for endowment), the campaign was reorganized under the Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund name, as a program of the Arizona Memorial Museum Association (AMMA) in partnership with the National Park Service. The projected cost of the project is estimated at $60 million today
