Muscular Dystrophy Association - Hawaii
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary national health agency dedicated to conquering neuromuscular diseases. The local MDA Hawaii office is available to serve anyone diagnosed with one the neuromuscular diseases covered by our program.
Description:
The Muscular Dystrophy Association provides the Hawaii community with (1) applied scientific investigation, (2) medical services and clinical care, and (3) widespread public health education. Thanks to the Labor Day Telethon - brought to viewers in Hawaii by KITV4 - and many other fundraising events, MDA Hawaii has been able to maintain a variety of health care services. MDA Hawaii is funded almost entirely by individual private contributors and does not receive any government grants.
History:
The Muscular Dystrophy Association was created in 1950 by a group of adults with muscular dystrophy, parents of children with muscular dystrophy, and a physician-scientist studying the disorder. Since its earliest days, MDA has been energized by its number-one volunteer and national chairman, entertainer Jerry Lewis.
