We are dedicated to developing Hawaii's youth through the promotion of civic responsibility, personal development and community service.
Description:
Since its inception, Optimist Club of Honolulu (OCH) has been very active with the youth in the community. In the past and present, OCH has worked closely with other youth organizations such as the Kapiolani Hospital, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, HUGS and Easter Seals, Office of the Attorney General, as well as schools such as Kaimuki Middle School. Keeping in tune with the Optimist Creed, OCH reflects on building character, leadership, teamwork, and knowledge through community service. We are currently entering our 9th consecutive year in partnering with Kaimuki Middle School's youth to make up the Junior Optimist Club which also focuses on community service.
History:
On July 31, 1985 Optimist Club of Honolulu , chartered its first club in Hawaii known as Honolulu Optimist International(H.O.I.). Optimist Club of Honolulu is a community service organization which is part of Optimist International. OCH consist of about 40 members, mainly from Hawaii and Los Angeles. Optimist International consists of about 114,000 members with over 3500 clubs spanning across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Optimists conduct 65,000 service projects each year, serving six million young people. Optimist also spend $78 million on their communities annually. Its motto, "Friend of Youth" is exemplified by its various programs for the youth such as Youth Appreciation Week, the Oratorical Contest, Bike Safety Week, the Hawaii Optimist Qualifying International Junior Golf Tournament, Youth Clubs, Respect for Law, Tri-Star Sports, and Essay Contest, Millineum Children Congress.
