The mission of United States Veterans Initiative (or U.S.VETS) is: "to assist the greatest number of homeless veterans to achieve their highest level of independence as rapidly as possible."
Description:
U.S.VETS is a program designed to help homeless veterans get off the street and back on their feet. We provide services to these veterans to assist them with addiction and mental health issues. After they complete this 90-day program they enter the workforce department where they are assisted in finding jobs. The last phase is the transitional housing where veterans are encouraged to live on their own while still having program support.
History:
U.S.VETS (formerly LA VETS) was started in 1993 in Los Angeles with a small building which housed 20 veterans. Today we have 10 sites all over the country with over 5,000 veterans having been served throughout the years. Our Hawaii site was opened in August 2002 providing low-income housing for veterans. In 2003 we began our intense 90-day back to work program (VIP program). The positions here are held by staff members and AmeriCorps members. These people provide direct services to our homeless veterans.
