The Blood Bank of Hawaii (BBH) is the sole provider of blood and blood products to all civilian hospitals throughout the islands. Our mission is to provide a safe and adequate blood supply for the patients in our state who require blood transfusions for childbirth, trauma, surgery, transplants, and treatment of life-threatening diseases and medical conditions.

Description:
BBH supplies lifesaving blood products from over 53,000 blood donations collected from more than 28,000 volunteer blood donors each year. BBH currently operates out of a main donor center on Dillingham Boulevard. This facility encompasses a 12-bed blood collection center, blood component processing, inventory and distribution stations, administrative and donor recruitment team offices and a reference laboratory for handling special transfusion cases. We also have a satellite donor center on Queen Street downtown and a 34-foot bloodmobile that travels to neighborhoods throughout Oahu. We distribute blood to hospitals 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

History:
The Blood Bank of Hawaii has a rich history, meeting the needs of Hawaii's patients for 60 years. Founded in 1941, the organization was originally known as the Honolulu Blood and Plasma Bank operating out of The Queen's Hospital. The Blood Bank operated as a war-time agency with the outbreak of World War II returning to its civilian status in 1942. Over the years, the name changed to Blood Bank of Hawaii, services were expanded to include neighbor island blood drives and Hawaii's unique ethnic population became nationally recognized as a source for many types of rare blood. Today, the Blood Bank of Hawaii is on the cutting edge of technology, participating in state-of-the art research programs and adhering to the highest standards of quality.
