The Alzheimer's Association is the premiere source of information and support services for the 28,000 people in Hawaii living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and their families.
The Association is the only organization in Hawaii dedicated solely to helping people with Alzheimer's disease, their families, and caregivers.
The Association also serves professional caregivers, schools, emergency first responders, senior groups, service groups, businesses, and the general community.
The Alzheimer's Association programs and services include:
INFORMATION AND REFERRAL SERVICES: staff and volunteers lend a listening ear to caregivers, suggest resources and provide basic information on diagnosis, symptoms and understanding Alzheimer's disease, managing difficult behaviors, and new drug treatments.
HELPLINE: a 24-hour information, referral and emotional support telephone program with a toll free number - 800.272.3900. After hours calls are linked with the National Alzheimer's Association Contact Center with access to over 145 languages.
CARE CONSULTATION: consultations available via telephone, e-mail, and in person provide assessment of needs, assistance with planning and problem solving, and supportive counseling for family members and persons with dementia.
WHAT NOW? CAREGIVER ORIENTATION SERIES: scheduled throughout the year so caregivers can elect to select the training that is most needed, or take the complete 8 week course. The series is FREE to family caregivers and comes with a FREE "Quick Guide and Resource Manual."
CAREGIVER UNIVERSITY(TM) The Achievement Certificate in Alzheimer's Care Program is a comprehensive training course for professional caregivers in dementia care.
RESOURCE LENDING LIBRARY: over 400 books and videos available for loan and over 100 reference items available to the public. Some materials are available in several languages.
THE KAKO`O NEWSLETTER: with latest information on care giving issues, events, and more.
CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUPS: meeting once a month at various locations around the state. Family members and caregivers have the opportunity to share information, develop care giving skills, and provide mutual support in a small group setting.
MEDICALERT+SAFE RETURN PROGRAM: helps reunite people with Alzheimer's disease and related memory impaired disorders who wander off and become lost with their caregivers. MedicAlert+Safe Return is a national registration program that works at the community level.
EDUCATION WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS: for family caregivers, professional caregivers, and the general public on a wide range of topics such as Challenging Behaviors, End of Life, and Caregiving Through Poetry.
COMMUNITY PRESENTATIONS: provided by staff and volunteers for schools, churches, businesses and other community organizations on the warning signs of Alzheimer's disease and how to live a brain-healthy lifestyle.

History:
Established in 1982, the Alzheimer's Association-Aloha Chapter has served the people of Hawai'i for over twenty years. The Aloha Chapter is one of 81 chapters nation-wide. Our office is located in Honolulu and has program offices in Hawaii, Kauai and Maui counties.
