Our mission is to record, preserve and tell the stories of Hawai'i and the Pacific, inspiring our guests to embrace and experience our natural and cultural world.
Description:
Bishop Museum is a place where families can learn about their island heritage and discover the wonders of science through fun, hands-on exhibits and programs. It is also a tour destination where people from around the world learn about our multi-culture and diverse communities. Nearly half the schoolchildren in the state annually visit and benefit from the informal learning process of interactive, educational displays. In addition, the Museum continues to develop and maintain outreach programs for both the neighbor-island communities and other national venues.
History:
Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum was founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop as a memorial to his late wife, Princess Pauahi, the last direct descendant of the Kamehameha line of Hawaiian chiefs. It was Mr. Bishop's intent that Bishop Museum should "rank with the museums of the world." Today, Bishop Museum is recognized as one of the world's leading scientific and historical institutions. It houses the largest collection of Hawaiian and Pacific cultural and natural history research specimens anywhere, and its scientific contributions at an international level are matched by its role in providing public service to Hawai'i and its visitors.
