The mission of the VIPS Program is to facilitate and promote opportunities for citizen involvement and participation within the Judiciary based on the needs of the Judiciary and the skills, talents and interests of the volunteers. The goals of the program are:
- To increase public awareness of the Judiciary, its programs and the judicial process.
- To enhance the level of services to the community and Judiciary clients through effective use of volunteers working with court personnel.
Description:
VIPS places volunteers in various agencies within the Judiciary, where volunteers could receive the most benefit and provide the best assistance to staff, based on their interest and capabilities. VIPS works to ensure that all placements are mutually beneficial as to maximize the commitment of volunteers and retention of placement offices. Applications are now accepted on-line, through www.courts.state.hi.us.
History:
VIPS was formed in 1971, originally named Volunteer Services Program, involved primarily with the mentoring of troubled teens. In 1986, the scope of the program was expanded to service more offices within the Judiciary, and the named was officially changed to Volunteers in Public Service (VIPS) to the Courts.
