The Outdoor Circle's mission is "to keep Hawaii clean, green and beautiful by preserving, protecting and enhancing the environment for future generations." We focus on urban forestry and beautification and monitor illegal and inappropriate signs and billboards from cluttering Hawaii's streets and skies. We further advocate for underground wiring to ensure clear view planes and responsible development.
Description:
The Outdoor Circle is Hawaii's oldest volunteer, environmental non-profit organization, established in 1912. Presently we have thirteen branches on four Hawaiian islands which are part of the statewide organization located in Honolulu. We frequently partner with agencies such as the City & County of Honolulu, Department of Education and the Military to plant, preserve and protect trees and keep these urban areas green. Education and annual recognition of community beautification efforts are also at the forefront of our mission, which is the same today as it was in 1912.
History:
The Outdoor Circle was started by seven visionary and forward-thinking women in 1912 to ban billboards from the streets of Hawaii. Since then it has grown and branched out to include planting, preservation and protection of trees, advocating for underground wiring and responsible development and education. Our recent victories include the halting of aerial and mobile advertising.
