Hale Kau Kau unconditionally provides, 365 days a year, a free meal on site to those who do not have the resources to meet this basic need, delivers a free meal to homebound individuals who are aged or stricken with various disabilities and distributes emergency food boxes when requested to individuals or families in crisis.
Description:
The program functions under the guidance of an advisory board from the community; the Executive Director is the Pastor of Saint Theresa Church. The program is sustained through the efforts of a Kitchen Manager, Kitchen Assistant and Program Administrator. Contributions come from the parish community, Maui County, corporations and the community at large. Hale Kau Kau also partners with the Church's Outreach Coordinator who unconditionally provides hands-on assistance and networks with other agencies in providing help for those in the community who need assistance in other areas.
History:
It was August 1, 1991 when the Founders, a diverse group of individuals in the South Maui community, decided to build upon an unnamed but very active feeding program and called it "Hale Kau Kau-House of the Meals." (What's in a name? Hale is the Hawiian name for house, Kau Kau a slang word that derived from "chow") It was Fr. Jack Stawasz, then pastor of Saint Theresa Church in Kihei, who granted the founders' request to begin the service on Saint Theresa grounds. Hale Kau Kau has become and is a Program of Saint Theresa Church.
