Mental Health Kokua’s mission states: We believe that all citizens should have the opportunity to live and participate in and contribute to their communities. Through specially designed services and settings, Mental Health Kokua assists people with mental illness achieve optimum recovery and functioning in the community. The overarching goal of Mental Health Kokua (MHK), is to provide persons with psychiatric disabilities opportunities to recover, establish roles in the community, develop personal support networks, enjoy an improved quality of life and get the recovery services they need.

The ultimate goals of MHK are to provide persons with psychiatric disabilities opportunities to recover, establish roles in the community, develop personal support networks, and enjoy an improved quality of life. MHK services objectives are to provide support to consumers in a flexible, recovery-based manner. Consumers are to be involved in all aspects of their recovery and encouraged to participate in programs as part of the recovery process.
History:
MHK began as The House in 1973, specifically to assist persons recovering from serious mental illness in achieving their optimum level of independent living in the community. Mental Health Kokua (MHK) is a private non-profit organization established in 1973 to assist adults on Oahu in transitioning from the Hawaii State Hospital to the community. Since 1973, MHK has grown from a single program providing mental health services on Oahu, to an agency with recovery oriented services throughout Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. MHK provides a variety of programs statewide including transitional and supportive housing, case management, peer coaching, psycho-social rehabilitation, homeless outreach and respite care for family members. In fiscal year 2006-2007, MHK served over 1,500 individuals and their families, and employed 186 people. The agency is actively involved in advocacy for and action to address the needs of persons whose mental illness is interfering with their lives.
